Reigning champions St Catherine CC will take on the challenge of Corporate West Zone winners GC Foster College at 10:00 this morning at the Police playfield on Elletson Road in the quarter-final round of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) JAM T20.

In the 2:00 pm clash at the same venue, the Corporate Central Zone winners Jamaica Defence Force renew rivalry with Melbourne CC in another expected humdinger.

Melbourne lost to the soldiers by four wickets in the preliminary phase and JDF captain Damion Grey is expecting another strong challenge in today’s match.

“We know they we will come hard at us but we’ll have a simple game plan. They have a pretty inexperienced team so once we can target their experienced players it should put us in a position to do well. We want to do the basics in this game and I think we have a pretty good chance,” Grey told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.

Melbourne’s skipper Nikita Miller is confident his team will put in a much-improved showing for this clash.

“We have a few games under our belt now and we should be better. We weren’t so well prepared for that match. We are into the quarter-finals and I have plenty of confidence in our bowling. Once we can get the batting together and put in a good display in the field, we should do well,” Miller said.

In other quarter-final match-ups at Chedwin Park, East Zone winners St Mary CA battle West Zone rulers Westmoreland CA in the opener, while last season’s beaten semi-finalists Manchester CA take on Corporate East champions St Thomas in the afternoon clash.

Plenty eyes will be on West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell, who, fresh from his stint in the Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) tournament in South Africa, bowled St Catherine CC to a 129-run victory against Boys’ Town in the Corporate West Zone last weekend.

The win ensured that St Catherine CC progressed as one of the two best second-placed teams.

The fast bower grabbed a hattrick on his way to bagging 6-10 off four overs to dismantle Boys’ Town for a paltry 32 off 11 overs and two balls in their search of an improbable 162 for victory.

Russell, who was a part of the World Cup-winning regional T20 team and a member of the Delhi Daredevils squad that reached the semi-final of the CLT20, only returned to the island the day before, but showed no ill-effects from his tedious trek across the globe in his merciless destruction of the Boys’ Town batting line-up.

He was ably assisted by spinner Odean Brown, who took 3-5 with his wrist-spin bowling.

Also at Up Park Camp, GC Foster hammered Portmore by 122 runs at Up Park Camp to top the Corporate West Zone.

Former 50-overs champions St Ann surrendered to a four-wicket loss to Mico University at the Noranda Bauxite ground in Discovery Bay.

At the Manley Horne Park, the Manchester CA team defeated hosts St Elizabeth by 28 runs to finish atop the South Central Zone.
