Long Island, St Elizabeth share Michael Holding cricket trophy
LONG Island and St Elizabeth Masters shared the trophy and the prize money in the Michael Holding Masters Cricket Competition which was played at Ultimate Cricket Ground in Discovery Bay, St Ann on Saturday.
Long Island made 142 for 4 in 30.1 overs after winning the toss, when the skies opened up with a heavy shower of rain. No further play was possible as the two run-ups were soaked and unsafe for the bowlers.
At that point the run getters were captain Cliff Rowe with 36, Roger Rowe with 24, Cyril Choy with 24, former national representatives Wayne Cuff with 24, and Clem Thompson with 21. The wickets were shared one-a-piece among Gary Bromfield, Lennox Simpson and Junior Bromfield, while Delroy Morgan was controversially given out by the ‘obstruction’ route.
The two teams shared the $300,000 prize money. They remained unbeaten throughout the competition, having won all their matches on the way to the final.
Captain of St Elizabeth Masters Wayne Billings with 194, won the trophy for most runs; Delroy Hewitt also of St Elizabeth took the trophy for most wickets (9-72).
The Man-of-the-Series went to Dixieth Palmer of 2009 winner Queens Masters. He scored 164 runs, including the only century of 127 (the highest single individual score this year) and took eight wickets for 55 runs.
Four scholarships were awarded valuing $50,000 each, while each awardee got a bat, a box and a cap. The scholarship awardees were Andre McCarty of St Elizabeth, who now attends STETHS; Anniel Clarke of St Ann, who attends Madras Primary; Romario Jones of Clarendon and Edwin Allen and Asad Wedderburn of Kingston, a student of St Andrew Technical High School.
This makes a total of 20 scholarships awarded over a four-year period. The awardees are among the top performers in the Jamaica National Under-13 Cricket Competition.
Jamaica National and Digicel were the competition’s sponsors.
