ARCADIA, California (CMC) — Jamaican jockey Rajiv Maragh scored his second Breeders Cup triumph of the weekend when he carried hot favourite Groupie Doll to a resounding victory in the US$1-million Grade One Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint Stakes here Saturday.

The 27-year-old kept the four-year-old chestnut filly in range throughout the 1,400-metre trip before surging in mid-stretch to reach the wire 4 1/2 lengths clear at Santa Anita Park.

The time of one minute, 20.72 seconds was just outside the record of 1:19.70.

Groupie Doll has now won every one of her last five starts with Maragh in the saddle, and is five-of-eight this year.

“She shows up every time. [She’s] just an awesome filly,” Maragh said.

“I didn’t think there was a need to save a length or two and jeopardise getting a clear trip. I thought the most important thing was to get her in the clear, in her comfort zone.”

Going off at odds of 3-5, Maragh broke Groupie Doll smartly from post number nine and settled her wide near the back of the 10-horse field, as Teddy’s Promise set the pace through the half-mile.

Dust and Diamonds tracked from second, while Turbulent Descent kept an eye on the leaders from third.

Maragh moved Groupie Doll into third on the turn and once the race turned for home, he powered after the leaders, easily overtaking them to reach the wire under some left-handed reminders.

On Friday’s opening day of the Breeders Cup, Maragh took the $500,000 Juvenile Sprint Stakes with Hightail.

He has now won three career Breeders Cup races after capturing the Dirt Mile last year with Caleb’s Posse.
