Two Westmoreland schools through to D’Cup semis
FROME, Westmoreland – FORMER champions Frome Technical High and Mannings School pulled off miraculous recoveries in yesterday’s final set of games in the quarterfinals to advance to Saturday’s semi-finals of the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboys football competition.
After losing games on Saturday, Mannings shocked Ben Francis KO champions St Elizabeth Technical 2-0 in Santa Cruz while Frome held Glenmuir High 0-0 at Frome as two schools from Westmoreland are in the semis for the second time ever and first since 2005.
Seven years ago eventual winners Godfrey Stewart High and Mannings were semi-finalists.
Despite their first loss since going down to Munro College in the return leg of the first round, STETHS topped Group A ahead of Mannings on a superior goal differential as both finished on six points.
Glenmuir topped Group B with five points from a win and two draws while Frome edged Bog Walk on goal difference after both accumulated four points each.
On Saturday Frome will play St Elizabeth Technical at Jarrett Park while Mannings return to Santa Cruz to face Glenmuir.
The other Western school Cedric Titus were beaten 2-0 by Garvey Maceo while Manchester High and Bog Walk were goalless.
At Santa Cruz yesterday, Tevin Daley and Romario Pessoa scored in the second half to extend Mannings’ Cinderella run in the competition.
Frome turned in a courageous display despite playing the high octane Glenmuir without influential captain Romario Myles who was suspended after yellow card accumulation.
Frome created a number of scoring chances but had to thank goalkeeper Omeally Perrin who pulled off several brilliant saves.
Perrin’s brilliant one-hand save in the first half denied Newton Henry and blocked a shot from Ricardo Dennis late in the second half.
