daCosta Cup finals set
St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Glenmuir High will both be seeking a third title on Saturday when they meet in the finals of the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel daCosta Cup football competition at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
The teams earned the right after scoring contrasting wins in the semi-finals on Saturday — Glenmuir finally putting a stop to Mannings School’s fairytale run after hammering them 3-0 at STETHS, while Frome Technical made STETHS work hard for a 1-0 extra-time win.
STETHS will be seeking to complete their first rural area double after taking the Ben Francis KO, beating yet another Westmoreland school Grange Hill on penalties in the final.
In the semis, Noel Johnson scored three times in the first-half as Glenmuir took the winds out of Mannings’ sails early with goals in the 10th and 12th minutes, then another in time added in time added on at the end of the first round.
Despite an improved performance in the second-half, Mannings failed to close the gap.
Frome Technical failed to score a goal in their last two games, drawing 0-0 against Glenmuir in their last quarterfinal game on Wednesday and again against STETHS on Saturday, but their defense and superb goalkeeping from Omeally Perrin kept them in the game.
The Frome defence made one crucial mistake in the second half of extra-time, however, and with penalty kicks looming, Carl Campbell made use of the space he was given and powered a shot past Perrin.
