Smith, Mullings in rematch at Rumble on JamRock
FORMER Wray & Nephew Contender’s Rikardo ‘The Surgeon’ Smith and Sakima Mullings are set to showdown once again at the Wray & Nephew Rumble on JamRock, a Fight Night presented by SportsMax, on Saturday at the National Indoor Sports Centre.
Mullings and Smith were matched up last year in the 2011 Wray & Nephew Contender television series second semi-final match. Smith, in an exceptional display of stamina, strength and smarts, outmanoeuvred crowd favourite Mullings, with judges scoring the fight 77-75, 78-74, 77-75 in favour of Smith. Smith went on to defeat Devon Moncrieffe in the final and was crowned the first Wray & Nephew Contender Middleweight Champion.
The Wray & Nephew Rumble on JamRock will showcase a six-fight card starting at 5:30 pm with the Smith/Mullings showdown at 7:45 pm. This promises to be a long-awaited grudge match as Mullings challenges ‘The Surgeon’, who many believe took away his glory during the popular television series.
The night will round-off with the highly anticipated WBA Featherweight title fight, starting at 10:30 pm, between Jamaica’s Nicholas ‘The Axeman’ Walters and Colombia’s Daulis Prescott, as Walters aims to make history by becoming the first Jamaican to win a title fight on home ground.
The other international contenders set to showdown are Alysia Sanchez (Venezuela) vs Maria Elena Villalobos (Mexico) for the WBA Female Super Bantamweight title fight at 6:15 pm; WBA Super Bantamweight former champion Mauricio Reynoso (Peru) vs Jamie Barboza (Costa Rica) for the WBA Fedelatin Lightweight Title at 7:45 pm; Rikardo Smith (Jamaica) vs Sakima Mullings (Jamaica), welterweight fight at 8:35 pm, and Kina Malpartida (Peru) vs Stacey ‘Stay Lo’ Reile (USA) for the WBA Super Featherweight Title at 9:15 pm.
The Fight Night will also see two outstanding Jamaican boxers, George Leslie ‘Bunny’ Grant and Richard ‘Shrimpy’ Clarke being honoured by SportsMax for being contenders for world boxing titles on Jamaican soil.
For those who want to join the Rumble, tickets are available at Wyndham Kingston, all Western Sports locations and Total Gas Stations in Liguanea, Washington Blvd, Mandeville and Ocho Rios. Tickets cost $2,000 for general admission with any Wray & Nephew Bottle Cap and $5,000 for Ringside VIP (food and drink inclusive) with any Wray & Nephew Bottle Cap.
