WEST Indies beat Bangladesh by 18 runs in their one-off Twenty20 international at Shere Bangla stadium on Monday.

Marlon Samuels hit a 43-ball 85 not out which included nine sixes and three boundaries to lift the tourists to 197-4 in their 20 overs. The home team managed 179-1 in their 20 overs.

Bangladesh, despite losing just a wicket in the chase, fell 18 short of their target. It is the first instance of a team losing just one wicket in a completed second innings in a Twenty20 international, and also being beaten. 

Bangladesh were given an excellent foundation in their response, with Anamul Haque setting the tone in a brisk opening stand. Anamul was the only wicket to fall in the chase, and Bangladesh looked on track till the end of the Powerplay.

Overs 11-15 in Bangladesh innings yielded just 33 runs and the required-rate crept to 15.6 at the end of that phase. Tamim began to middle the ball, and Mahmudullah thrashed Kemar Roach in the final over for 18, their century stand.

Earlier, Marlon Samuels smashed 85 off 43 balls Monday to help West Indies pile up 197 for 4.

Samuels hit nine sixes and three boundaries in aggressive batting, backed by Darren Bravo who smashed 41 off 28 balls.

The tourists lost aggressive opener Chris Gayle (6) early after captain Darren Sammy won the toss and elected to bat first. But Samuels and Bravo took charge to steer West Indies to a strong position.

Rubel Hossain struck early, removing both openers Gayle and Dwayne Smith (24). But he proved very expensive and finished with 2-63, including 29 runs in the 20th over he bowled.

Sohag Gazi and Ziaur Rahman claimed one wicket each.
