Weeks after a convincing 3-0 whipping of Hydel High in the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup, St George’s College continued their winning form to beat Glenmuir High and secure the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel Oliver Shield.

Glenmuir were on a high after upstaging Ben Francis holders St Elizabeth Technical to clinch the daCosta Cup title, but were put to the sword by the corporate area champions in the first leg which was played at the Constant Spring Sports Complex. Both teams entered the break level, with Newton Henry scoring for Glenmuir to cancel Andre Lewis’ opener for STGC in the 38th minute.

In the second half the ‘Light Blues’ reigned supreme as goals from Mark Brown, Cordel Benbow and Kendon Anderson all but decided the title and nullified any doubts as to which schoolboy football team was the best in the island, as they clinched a 4-1 victory. With little surprise, STGC controlled the possession and passed the ball about with guile and precision that dazzled the corporate area for months.

Squaring off at Brancourt in the second leg, Glenmuir managed to keep STGC honest for a majority of the encounter, though the defending champions did manage to create a few chances. Neither team was able to break the deadlock in the first half but just as with the first leg, Newton Henry got on the score sheet for the daCosta Cup champions to give them a 1-0 lead and set them on course for a consolation victory.

However, St Georges was able to pull one back before full time, and in the end retained their all-island title with a 5-2 aggregate triumph. The victory ensured that they clinched their third Olivier Shield in the past five years, signalling that Neville Bell and his STGC group are on course to build a legacy that surpasses all others.
