GORDON ‘Butch’ Stewart has lauded Jamaicans for their “spectacular acts of caring, self-sacrifice and giving to the less fortunate among us”.

In his annual Christmas message, the Jamaica Observer chairman also urged Jamaicans to let the difficult times spur them to redouble their efforts to make the country prosperous. Following is the full text of his message:

“Like so many other Jamaicans, I find that Christmas is such a wonderful time of the year. This is especially so because during this time, more than any other, we can witness some of the most spectacular acts of caring, self-sacrifice and giving to the less fortunate among us. I am confident that this year will be no exception.

“It is also heart-warming and reassuring to see the demonstrations of resilience, courage and spirit that have made Jamaicans a rare breed and given us the ability to ride out economic and natural storms.

“This is the time of year when men, women and children, family and friends everywhere join in harmony and celebrate the true meaning of the season, the good things in life, and our beautiful island home.

“We can’t, and dare not pretend that life is rosy and that we are not faced with many challenges; because we are still in the grip of a sluggish world economy, and indebtedness and joblessness remain a millstone around our necks. But all this should spur us to redouble our efforts to make this country prosperous for all of us. Holding hands as team Jamaica, we can overcome anything.

“For now, however, let us remember to give thanks for all the blessings, including the small ones, and for all the good people here and overseas who have done so much for our country. There is no better time to reflect and to appreciate what we have.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to extend special season’s greetings and good cheer to Jamaica Observer readers, advertisers, vendors, staff and well-wishers.
