PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Mystery off-spinner Sunil Narine wrecked Guyana to give Trinidad and Tobago the upper hand on the second day of their fourth-round match in the Regional Four-Day Championship here yesterday.

The West Indies star snared six for 38 as Guyana crashed from a position of 156 for one to 195 for nine at the close at Queen’s Park Oval.

Leon Johnson stroked a superb 87 and opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul hit 42, but Guyana lost their last eight wickets for 25 runs in a shocking collapse.

Earlier, T&T had carried their overnight position of 269 for five to 319 all out with captain Denesh Ramdin top scoring with 84, after resuming the day on 75.

All-rounder Imran Khan added just three after beginning the day on 41 as T&T lost their last five wickets for just 40 runs.

Left-arm spinner and captain Veerasammy Permaul claimed four for 62, while medium pacer Paul Wintz (2-50) and fast bowler Ronsford Beaton (2-59) finished with two apiece.

Assad Fudadin and Tagenarine Chanderpaul then gave Guyana a bright start, putting on 30 in quick time.

The left-handed Fudadin dominated the stand with a cameo 29 from just 32 balls with six fours before he fell lbw to fast bowler Shannon Gabriel.

Johnson then joined Chanderpaul in an excellent stand of 136 for the second wicket, which put T&T on the backfoot in the afternoon sessions.

The left-handed Johnson faced 147 balls in 227 minutes at the crease and struck 12 fours and a six, while Chanderpaul, also a left-hander, consumed 147 balls in a 227-minute knock, with seven boundaries.

Once Chanderpaul edged Narine to Dwayne Bravo at slip in the final hour, it sparked a collapse as Narine ran through the middle and lower order.

Johnson was shaping up well for his maiden first-class century when he misread a Narine doosra and was bowled at 157 for three.

Narine then claimed the two big wickets of Ramnaresh Sarwan for one and veteran West Indies left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul for eight, to leave the innings in turmoil.
