Fromage — Gourmet Market
There’s a new eatery in Kingston adding to the city’s burgeoning eclectic taste. Aptly called Fromage Gourmet Market it’s nestled among other food establishments at 8 Hillcrest Avenue and offers as its very name suggests an impressive variety of award-winning artisanal cheeses from Canada, France, Holland, Italy, Spain and Southern California, to list a few. The menu offerings range from artisanal paninis: Roma, Black Forest, Fromaggio, Marlin Milan, Parma, Turkey Bijou and La mancha — grilled sandwiches made on Italian bread, flat breads to chowder du jour in bread boule, dips and spreads, cheese flights, fresh field green salads, desserts and beverages.
Fromage opened its doors on Thursday, February 28, and those who have tasted the eatery’s offerings have been effusive in their praises. Thursday Life stopped by Fromage two Saturdays ago, and immediately felt at home with the cosy French decor and fare. We ordered the Marlin Milan, a smoked marlin sandwich with white cheddar and pepper jelly and the Alfredo pasta with Fromage’s exclusive premium French soda. Nice post-retail — (Foot Candy) fix! Co-owner Kirk Chin, who looked quite at home behind the counter, tells us that Fromage prides itself on delivering great food and excellent service. Indeed, Fromage has extended its range of food services to include catering for events with cheese platters and gift packaging solutions with wines and cheeses for those celebratory occasions.
Menu options range from $200 for the strawberry ice tea, $750 for the Marlin Milan and Alfredo pasta each and $1,500 for the cheese flights, which allows you two cheeses of your choice from each region (France, USA and Spain) served with two accompaniments (jellies, nuts) and crackers or baguettes. “I love cheeses and food especially gourmet food,” said Lisa-Gaye Chin, co-owner of Fromage. Customers can also complement artisanal cheeses with fine red, white and organic wines from the cellar.
As cosy as Fromage is, be prepared to be somewhat overwhelmed by the offerings– there is a lot to feast your eyes on, like the enticing snacks and tempting desserts.
Visit the Fromage Gourmet Market at unit #1 and ogle at the array of wines, artisanal cheeses, desserts, beverages and the soup of the day.
