MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica – Jamaica won five medals on this morning’s first session of the 42nd CARIFTA Games track and field Championships that got under way at the Thomas Robinson stadium in Nassau Bahamas.

Britny Kerr in the Under-17 girls high jump 1.68m and defending champion Fedrick Dacres in the under 20 boys discus throw – 61.27m won gold medals; Chadwick daCosta in the discus – 55.58m and Janell Fullerton in the Under-17 girls shot put – 13.75m won silver medals while Under-17 high jumper Shiann Salmon – 1.60m won a bronze.

Also seven of eight quarter milers advanced to this evening’s finals with last year’s bronze medalist Lennox Williams missing a spot in the Under-20 boys finals after some confusion in his semi-finals heat.

Reports are that he had some confusion in his lane and finished well back, failing to advance.

IAAF World Junior Championships finalist Javon Francis will represent Jamaica while Chriss-Ann Gordon and Yanique McNeil will contest the girls Under-20 final.

Martin Manley and Canigga Harriott will contest the Boys Under-17 final while Tiffany James who won the 800m last year and Shannon Kalawan will contest the Under-17 girls finals.

Also down to be contested later today are the semi-finals and finals of all four 100m races and the 1500m on the track while the boys Under-17 triple jump, boys Under-20 high jump and girls under-20 long jump will also be contested along with the first day of the boys heptathlon and girls pentathlon.
