Ja for World Surfing Games in Panama
Jamaica’s National Open surf team will depart the island for Panama on Thursday where the four-member team will compete in the men’s open division.
The team consists of Icah Wilmot, Ackeam Phillips, Michael Panton and Ronley Lewis.
“It isn’t the strongest team we have fielded over the years, but the standard of Jamaica’s surfing has improved tremendously,” said Jamaica Surfing Association (JSA) President Billy Wilmot. “We are not a top-tier team by any means, but individual performances benefit from the immeasurable opportunity for exposure and international recognition afforded by taking part in events such as the World Surfing Games.
“Surf brand representatives follow the event looking for any new ‘sponsorable’ athletes and this is where our locals have an equal chance in the spotlight, and an impressive performance can lead to a lucrative career as a professional surfer.”
The event begins on Saturday.
