National make winning start at domino tourney
DEFENDING champions National Baking Company opened the National Association of Domino Bodies (NADB) Kingston and St Andrew Region 2013 Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Business House League on a winning note last Friday.
The champions visited the home of the sponsors, Wray & Nephew Limited, at 234 Spanish Town Road and inflicted a 12-point defeat (135-123) in the Zone A opening round competition in Division One.
In other Zone A games in the top tier league, Jamaica Gleaner Company outclassed Jamaica Public Service (JPS) 141-122 at Marcus Garvey Drive Hunt’s Bay plant, while the effects of rain prevented the University of the West Indies from playing away to Social Development Commission at 22 Camp Road.
In Zone B of Division One, Seprod bounced Jamaica Brandy 125-110 away at 232 Spanish Town Road; Berger Paints visited Kingston Wharves at King Port Building at Newport West and edged the hosts 139-136, while the Courts Sports Club versus Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) encounter scheduled for 1 Ivy Green Crescent, was also postponed owing to the effects of the rainy weather.
Courts Sports Club won last year’s Division Two, and have been promoted to the top division along with the University of the West Indies.
In the lower division, Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) slammed Kirk Distributors Limited 141-112 at Nethersole Place, and Carib Cement Company defeated Ministry of Finance 121-110 at Rockfort in Zone A, while in Zone B, NHT beat Cari- Med 144-138 at 4 Park Boulevard, and Jamaica Observer scored the most points on the night in a 148-139 victory over First Heritage CCU at 40-42 1/2 Beechwood Avenue. In the cross-zone match of the week, STATIN from Zone B defeated Nutrition Products from Zone A 133-110 at 6 Marcus Garvey Drive.
Twelve teams will compete in Division One, with JUTC and JPS returning after a one-year break, while 10 teams will contest Division Two, including three newcomers — Ministry of Finance, Cari-Med and Kirk Distributors. Over 1,000 players will be involved.
JPS won the Dress Parade for Division One, and the Jamaica Observer won the Dress Parade for Division Two.
