Walter takes Hi Pro Grand Prix & High League
JASON Walter, riding Jiggy, doubled in the final show jumping round this past weekend at the Kingston Polo Club and Equestrian Centre, winning the High League on Saturday and returning on Sunday to take the Hi Pro Grand Prix.
The team of Sara Misir, riding Alex, provided strong competition for Walter and Jiggy, having won round two of the three-part series and setting up a dead heat entering round three.
On Saturday both riders competing in the High League over 1.10m obstacles, completed the first round each with eight jumping faults. The deadlock was, however, broken in the second round with Misir going first and correctly going for a fast speed round time and unfortunately accumulated an additional eight faults.
Walter seized the advantage and pulled off a well-controlled second round and was rewarded with no jumping faults and taking the overall competition with 47 points, two ahead of Misir.
The competition on Sunday for the premier Hi Pro Grand Prix event over 1.20m started the same as the high league with both riders starting with equal points. The combination of the increased jumping heights and difficulty again provided a dead heat with Misir and Walter both accumulating 12 jumping faults in round one.
An exciting jump-off round had to be used to decide the eventual winner. In the jump off, the combination of speed and least number of faults are the deciding factors. Misir had the speed doing the course in 38.62 seconds with eight jumping faults, while Walter invested 3.08 seconds more, completing the course in 41.70 seconds but with only four jumping faults.
The Medium League final competition started with Rachel Chandley and J Lo in the lead with 22 points, just ahead of Victoria Jones on Stormy, and Claire Schwapp on Trelawny were tied on 21 points, with Sofia Asher on Alibaba in the rear on 20 points.
In the final competition it was the speed of Asher and Alibaba that prevailed with Asher navigating the course in the blistering speed round time of 47.74 seconds, some 13.70 seconds faster than her closest rival, and with a total of eight jumping faults over the two rounds to become the eventual winner of the leg.
Tabulation of the final scores resulted in Asher surging ahead with the final leg win to share overall first-place honours with Rachel Chandley and J Lo, both being awarded 44 points, and third place being awarded to Victoria Jones on Stormy, having accumulated 41 points.
Nine riders competed in the fairly even Low League competition over the three rounds. The final round was won by Kristina Munroe on Domino, with Annie Stewart on Tsunami second, and Charlotte Clivio on Goofy in third.
Steady performances, however, by Stewart and Clivio in the earlier rounds eventually guaranteed high placement for Stewart being the overall winner with 40 points, one ahead of Clivio with 39 points, and third place being awarded to Hannah Deleon on Jack with 38 points.
