Campbell hits big ton as Melbourne scorch Kingston
Former national youth player Jon-Ross Campbell blasted an unbeaten century to help Melbourne CC to a 139-run win over visitors Kingston & St Andrew CA at Derrymore Road in the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) 50-overs club competition yesterday.
Scores: Melbourne CC 320-3 (49.3 overs); Kingston & St Andrew CA 181 (33.5 overs)
It was Melbourne’s second straight win of the season after also comprehensively defeating Boys’ Town last weekend.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Melbourne piled up a massive 320-3, thanks to Campbell’s commanding knock of 164 off only 128 balls. The opening batsmen hammered 17 boundaries and four sixes.
His opening partner, Tareque Whyte, struck 55 off 66 balls, including seven fours.
Wicketkeeper/batsman Carlton Baugh, who returned to the Melbourne team after a fall-out with the club last season, chipped in with 25 not out.
Left-arm spinner Omar Burke was Kingston & St Andrew’s best bowler, snatching 1-29 off 10 overs.
Facing a daunting target, Kingston & St Andrew temporarily fought the tide, but the regular loss of wickets left them dismissed for 181.
Opening batsman Kedar Brown was not bothered by the wet conditions that prevailed after an afternoon downpour as he scored 101 from a mere 57 deliveries. He struck 13 fours and five sixes. Shane Ricketts supported with 26 not out.
Melbourne’s left-arm spinner Christopher Lamont starred with 5-32 off six overs and five balls, while part-time off-spinner Andre McCarthy took 2-18, and leg-spinner Damion Jacobs finished with 2-45.
