Gareth Henry and Garron Palmer took the Open Men’s Doubles, while Geordine Henry teamed with Alya Lewis to take the Open Ladies’ event in the Constant Spring Golf Club’s ShuttleSMASHERS Doubles Badminton Tournament played over weekend.

The two pairs were the top seeds in their respective events.

In the male event final, Henry and Palmer took out the recent Doubles Mania winners, Anthony McNee and Dennis Coke. The winners lost the first game at 17-21 before easily capturing the second 21-6. In the third it was close going up to 13-13, then McNee and Coke won five unanswered points to take them to 18-13. It looked to be all over, but the Henry-Palmer tandem, aided by several mistakes by their opponents, fought back capturing seven straight points to lead 20-18. Although their opponents were able to deuce the game at 20-20, the winners then got the two points needed for victory.

In the ladies’ event, Geordine Henry retained her record of not dropping a game in tournament play during 2013, as she partnered Alya Lewis to a 21-16, 21-13 victory over reigning national senior and junior champion Katherine Wynter and her partner Ruth Williams.

The presentation of prizes for both the earlier singles and this doubles event is set for the Constant Spring Golf Club on Saturday at 4:00 pm.

Several sponsors came on board to make this Jamaica Badminton Association-sanctioned event an unqualified success. The major ones were Scotia Bank, T Geddes Grant Ltd, National Commercial Bank, Chad Auto Sales, Asphaltic Concrete Enterprise Ltd, Dr William Lee, Ensure, Christopher Edwards, Western Sports and Jamaica Biscuit Company.

Ladies’ Doubles — Christina Petri and Esther Reynolds defeated Iesha Gordon and Shantae Smith 24-22, 21-18.

C Division

Men’s Doubles — Adrian Lee and Maurice McLaren defeated Shaquille Palmer and Nicardo Reid 22-20, 21-17.

Ladies’ Doubles — Tiana Daley and Shezelle McTyson defeated Ravon Wong and Taylor-Ann Chin-Quee 17-21, 21-18, 21-8.

D Division

Men’s Doubles — Dejon Wright and Dane Sinclair defeated Isaac Roberts and Justin Taylor 19-21, 21-8, 25-23.

Ladies’ Doubles — Kendra Holness and Esther Roberts defeated Chelsea Evans and Shanique Peart 21-19, 19-21, 21-19.

Newcomers

Men’s Doubles — Gavin Blake and Mark Salmon defeated Jordan Payne and Kaream Spence 21-19, 18-21, 21-19.
