FOR Randy Robinson, a Jamaican third-year medical student in Russia, a meeting on the Met in that country with a group of Jamaicans decked in black, green and gold was not co-incidental, but a welcomed opportunity to reconnect with his homeland.

He spotted the colourful group — Owen Sterling, Olive McNaughton, Stephanie Muir and Christopher Samuda — in another cabin and decided to say hello.

“You’re Jamaicans!” Randy said, as his close-up of the Jamaican brand on their outfits confirmed his far-off suspicion.

“What a gwaan,” Stephanie responded, and everyone laughed out loud, followed by handshakes all round.

Randy said that it was the first while in Russia that he had seen any Jamaican on the Met.

As luck would have it, Randy had met a group with influence at the IAAF Athletics World Championships, which took place in Moscow from August 10-18.

So to his great surprise he was presented with VIP tickets to attend the event and it turned out to be a Russian reggae rave for him.

Randy is a past student of Munro College and the University of the West Indies (Mona), and is studying at The People’s Friendship University of Russia.
