Tribute to Captain Barkey

ONE year after his tragic death, family and friends of deejay Wayne ‘Captain Barkey’ Hamilton will stage ‘Port Fest: Tribute to Captain Barkey’ on October 13.

The concert will be held at Waves Beach in Portmore, St Catherine.

According to Barkey’s brother and chief organiser, Otis Ellis, several artistes have pledged their support.

“We had to do something to mark the passing of Captain Barkey, he contributed a lot to the business. As a soldier, he used to jump outa jeep an’ mash up dance an’ jump back inna jeep and drive off. Mi have to keep the event in respect to his contribution,” says Ellis.

Among the artistes confirmed for the concert are Barkey’s sidekick Wickerman, Jah Bouks, Lady G, Terror Fabulous, Pliers, Villa Dutch, and Chuck Fenda.

On October 13 last year, Captain Barkey was murdered in the parking lot of a motel in Bronx, New York.

He was killed along with his 38-year-old lover Tracy Bennett as they were about to leave the motel.

The shooter was Bennett’s estranged husband who committed suicide in Florida one week later.

Captain Barkey was a veteran of the sound system circuit. He started his career with two Spanish Town ‘sounds’ — Stereo One and People’s Choice.

He gained fame in 1996 with the hit single Go Go Wine.
