Hydel take command, but St George’s lag behind C’Down
LAST season’s finalists Hydel High took command of Group A with a resounding 4-0 and 3-0 wins over previous leaders Ascot High and Calabar, while high-riding Wolmer’s Boys’ were held to a draw with less fancied Denham Town High in Group C of the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup football competition.
In Group A, Hydel’s 3-0 victory over Calabar took them to 13 points, with Ascot, who drew 0-0 with Jonathan Grant, moved into second spot on 10 points ahead of Calabar with nine points.
Edith Dalton James (four points), Jonathan Grant High (two) and St Andrew Technical (one) brought up the lower half of the group.
Excelsior High crashed 1-2 to lowly Cumberland High and were overtaken atop the table in Group B by both Norman Manley and St Jago yesterday.
Norman Manley, who whipped Haile Selassie 3-0, assumed sole leadership on 11 points, one ahead of St Jago who spanked Waterford High 3-1. Excelsior are third also with 10 points.
Waterford High (four), Cumberland High (four) and Haile Selassie High (three) represented the trailing pack.
In Group C, Wolmer’s, who scored 20 goals without conceding even once in three previous outings, had to settle for a 1-1 result with Denham Town. That outcome meant both teams sit atop the standings with 10 points each, but Wolmer’s have the edge with a superior goal difference.
Third-placed St Catherine High were in touching distance with nine points, while Kingston Technical (three), Papine High (three) and Clan Carthy (zero) were already virtually out of contention to advance from the group.
Former winners Camperdown High (10 points) slipped ahead in Group D after title-holders St George’s College (eight) were held 1-1 by Charlie Smith High (five) on Saturday.
Vauxhall High (five points), Oberlin High (four) and Donald Quarrie High (zero) are the other teams in the group.
In Group E, many-time champions Jamaica College dismissed Bridgeport High 3-1 in their top-of-the-table clash and moved to 15 points, five more than Bridgeport in second on 10 points.
Jose Marti Technical moved to 10 points following their 3-1 win over Tivoli Gardens. The Ardenne/St Andrew College encounter was postponed until Thursday.
In Group F, Spanish Town High (seven points) swept to the summit after three rounds with a 3-1 defeat of third-placed Eltham High (four) on Saturday.
Second-place Greater Portmore High (five points) pushed Kingston College (three points) down to fourth with a shock 1-0 win.
In Group G, which lacks any traditional powerhouse team, Holy Trinity High continued their splendid form trouncing Meadowbrook 5-1 for the fifth consecutive win and onto 15 points.
Innswood High climbed into second spot on nine points after edging Trench Town 1-0 yesterday, who remained on nine points. St Mary’s College (six) clipped Campion College 1-0.
