Scotia, Peak Bottling share honours
SCOTIABANK ‘A’ and Peak Bottling Company were declared joint winners in Division One of the 2013 Business House Five-A-Side football league competition on Saturday, after both teams battled to a 1-1 full and extra time draw at the NWC playing field.
Power outage in the Mona area which lasted for over an hour, resulted in only the first half of extra time being played. The final decision to share the title was taken after a meeting with coaches Neville Bell of Scotiabank and Emelio Clarke of Peak Bottling with the organising committee.
Spanish Grain Store ‘B’ came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Kingston Bookshop in the Division Two final, and after extra time, they won 3-2 on penalties.
Donovan McCurdy gave Kingston Bookshop the lead in the fifth minute when he shot powerfully past Jovell Plunkett from close range.
The second half was the same as the first, and Juvaune Benjamin finally got the equaliser in the 36th minute, forcing the game into a penalty shoot-out, where the goalkeepers starred. Spanish Grain Store emerged champions after Jovell Plunkett blocked Wayne Christie’s spot kick with his foot, thus walking away with the Division Two trophy and $40,000.
The Division One final was less exciting. The game picked up after 10 minutes, but in the final minute of time added for the first half, Fabian Cooke’s shot to goal was deflected into the goal.
Donovan Hibbert got the equaliser for Scotiabank ‘A’ in the 36th minute. Each team will keep the trophy for six months and each received $45,000.
At the presentation ceremony, the leading goalscorers and MVPs for the Knockout and both Division One and Two were given Puma boots valued at $16,000 by the CEO of Western Sports, Carl Chang.
They also each received a trophy and $3,500 in cash.
Scotiabank were the major winners, as they walked away with seven awards and over $100,000 in cash. They won the Knockout title, joint Division One champions; Scotiabank ‘B’ finished third in Division One, and Bell was the coach of the year in his first season of 5-a-side football.
Scotiabank’s Diana Polack was also the manager of the year, and their goalkeepers Jabari Wallace and Damion Crooks were also MVPs for Division One and the knockout competition.
Jovell Plunkett of Spanish Grain Store ‘B’ was the MVP in Division Two and Andre McFarlane of Cable Pro Data Services was the leading goalscorer with 34 goals. Juvaune Benjamin of Spanish Grain Store ‘B’ was the knockout leading goalscorer with six goals, and Jason Grant of Jamaica Broilers copped the division award with nine goals. Special awards were given to photographer Joyce Fletcher and videographer Jose Walton.
