MONTEGO BAY, St James — Jamaicans will start the medal chase in the 20th World Masters Athletics competition in Porto Alegre, Brazil, today with four members of the five-member team taking part in the preliminaries of the 100m in respective age categories.
Deaneth Edwards will contest the 100m in the Women’s 40-44 age category and will be followed by Lyndy Headley in the Men’s 70-74 100m; Maynard McIntosh in the 50-54 100m and Samuel Brevett in the 45-49 section of the same event.
The finals for all four events will take place tomorrow, while Oral Anderson will contest the men’s 5,000m today.
Edwards, McIntosh and Brevett will also compete in the 200m later next week.
The Jamaican team arrived in Brazil on Monday and, according to a release from president Leo McEwan, has settled in well despite “the luggage of some members of the team not arriving. “Notwithstanding that, they are, however, looking forward to competing.”
According to Maynard McIntosh, veteran competitor who is attending his fourth Masters Championships, “We are very pleased to be here representing Jamaica, and though our numbers are small, we intend to make our presence felt.
“We intend to continue the tradition of track and field excellence for which Jamaica is known,” he added.
