Youth allegedly kills man whom he claims buggered him
A teenager last week faced the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court for reportedly chopping up a man who he claimed made sexual advances toward him and buggered him as a child.
The 18-year-old accused, of a St Andrew address, handed himself over to the police following the murder of 47-year-old Vincent Brown, a shopkeeper of the same address.
According to a police report, on September 2 the accused went to the now- deceased man’s home and, during a dispute, used a machete to chop Brown to death, killing him on the spot.
But the accused in his caution statement said that he acted out of self-defence, as he was fearful of being buggered again by the now- deceased who he said committed the act on him when he was in grade five.
According to the accused, on the day in question, he was at Brown’s home when he made sexual advances toward him and he used a piece of wood to ward off the attack. However, Brown kept coming at him so he used the machete to chop him as he did not want to be buggered him again. He said that he was still suffering from the effects of the alleged past sexual assault.
The accused man’s attorney, Kerry-Ann Wilson, told the court that she was distressed by her client’s report and that what had transpired was very unfortunate, as it could have happened to her brother. She asked Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey to grant her client bail.
She told the magistrate that her client, who had recently graduated from high school, had never got in trouble with the law before and that he was about to start a course at HEART Trust/NTA.
The magistrate, who accepted the application, offered the accused teen bail and instructed him to return to court on November 18.
Man arrested for buggering his 9-year-old daughter
A 52-year-old man, who is accused of buggering his nine-year-old daughter, also appeared before the court last week and was remanded into custody.
The accused man, who hails from a rural community in St Andrew, was taken into custody on September 14 and charged with buggery and grievous sexual assault following the incident, which reportedly occurred in August.
On Thursday, when he appeared in court for the start of a preliminary hearing, the matter was postponed to November 8 as the court is awaiting the medical report.
However, before the matter was rescheduled, his lawyer attempted to seek bail for him. He was however told by the magistrate to make his bail application on the next court date.
The accused, who is yet to plead, was then remanded into custody.
Man caught with salt fish in his water boots
A meat shop employee who police said had stolen over $1.44 million worth of goods from his workplace over a period of time, in association with another employee, was hauled before the court.
The accused, Ryan Wilson, who was employed to a meat shop in downtown Kingston as a meat cutter, was recently arrested and charged after he was reportedly caught attempting to leave the establishment with a quantity of salt fish in his water boots.
The prosecutor told the court that Wilson was caught on camera putting the items in his shoe and pulling down his pants over the boot to conceal the item.
According to the prosecutor, the company has since done an audit and found that the business was experiencing a loss of $1.4 million in goods.
The court was also told that another person was fingered in the theft but has not yet been arrested.
Wilson, who is charged with larceny as a servant, was however offered $150,000 bail by Magistrate Lorna Shelly-Williams on condition that he reports to the Olympic Gardens Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 6:00 am and 7:00 pm.
He is scheduled to return to court on November 5.
Insurance agent defrauds woman of life insurance payments
A former insurance agent, who reportedly ripped off a woman of $75,000 in life insurance premium payments, appeared before the court on charges of attempting to obtain money by false pretence and embezzlement.
Andrew Grant was dragged before the court after he reportedly collected the money from his former client and failed to hand it over to the insurance company.
However, on Wednesday when he appeared before Magistrate Lorna Shelly- Williams, the court was informed that the case file was incomplete; the matter was rescheduled for October 29. Grant’s bail was then extended.
The Crown is alleging that the complainant, who has been a client of Grant since 2009, gave him her premiums to pay on her behalf from November 2011 to July 2013 but that the company has not yet received the money.
It is reported that the complainant used to pay her premiums through salary deductions, but that she had stopped making payments when she lost her job. After acquiring a new job, she allegedly gave the money to Grant to pay to the company on her behalf.
Grant is accused of keeping all the premiums given to him and, following investigations, was arrested and charged.
