Historic landmark for Dane Nelson

Although there were two trophy races on the day, champion jockey Dane Nelson took the spotlight on the 11-race card at Caymanas Park yesterday.

Nelson joined a select band of riders to reach the impressive milestone of 700 career wins when he rode the Richard Azan-trained two-year-old Frangipani to victory in the first race over 1,200 metres.

Nelson completed a double by winning with Anarkali, trained by Dwight Chen, also over 1,200 metres.

Those wins by Nelson assisted him to narrow the gap in the jockeys’ championship against main rival and leading rider Omar Walker. Nelson moved to within four wins of the leader, having started the day five behind Walker.

Walker rode one winner, Scoop Jordyne in the Cecil Charlton Memorial Trophy, marking the first time this race was being run as a memorial event.

In the co-feature, The Royal Dad Trophy, Dick Cardenas continued his rich vein of form when he piloted the Wayne DaCosta-trained Royal Vibes to victory over 1,820 metres. Fantabulous ended in second position with Princess Shaniel (Shane Ellis) third.

Racing continues today with a nine-race offering.
