teenAGE is always seeking to prepare our young readers for the future. This week we start a new feature looking at faculties in some Jamaican universities and the programmes offered under each. This week we start with the Faculty of Humanities and Education at the University of the West Indies, Mona.

The Humanities are those disciplines that study the human way of life with emphasis being placed on analysing, being critical and speculative of human culture, while education refers to the teaching profession.

It is not surprising that the University of the West Indies joined these two areas, considering teaching or educational studies is directly related to people, with the faculty now ranging from dancers to teachers of computer science and information technology.

Some of the programmes offered for high school graduates (undergraduate courses) include diplomas in: media and communication; Caribbean sign language interpreting; and public service interpreting.

Bachelor of Arts programmes in: African and African diaspora studies; Caribbean sign language interpreting; computer science; digital media production (offered at the Western Jamaica Campus); dance; drama; entertainment and cultural enterprise management; French; French and Spanish; geography; history; history and archaeology; history education; history and heritage; integrated marketing communication; journalism; language, communication and society; language and linguistics; liberal studies; library and information studies; linguistics; linguistics and language education; literatures in English; mathematics; media and communication; music; philosophy; Spanish; theology; and visual arts.

Bachelor of Education courses in: computer science and information technology; early childhood education; educational administration; English language education; geography and social studies; history education; linguistic education; literacy studies; mathematics education; primary education; science education; school librarianship; and Spanish education.

Subject choices would be based on the programme you wish to enter, along with the staple mathematics and English Language; for example, history education obviously requires CSEC history or theology definitely requires religious education.

Since the offereings of this faculty are so extensive, the personality types are quite varied. For instance, to go into the performing arts, an artistic-minded person is required, while to do cultural studies, an analytic-minded person is required. However, what is common to all the programmes listed above is that an interest in human relations is a must, which creates a kind of bridge for the various personalities.
