Jamaican bobsledder defends coaches who dressed in blackface
KINGSTON, Jamaica — After coming under fire last month for donning black faces for their ‘Cool Runnings’ Halloween costumes, San Diego, United States high school coaches, Brian Basteyns and Harold Seeley, now have the support of at least one member of the original Jamaican bobsled team original New York Daily News story.
Devon Harris, who was a part of the 1988 Winter Olympics team that inspired the Disney film Cool Runnings, is reported to have said that he was pleased when he saw the Serra High School football coaches dressed as the team last month, according to New York Daily News.
“We’re flattered. We’re not offended,” Harris told station KSWB. “People are simply hyper sensitive when it comes down to race and racism.”
Harris said he has also spoken to two other members of the 1988 Winter Olympics team and none of them were offended so he called Coach Basteyns to offer support.
The two coaches came under heavy criticism last month from civil rights groups, including the NAACP and the Anti-Defamation League, who thought their costumes were insensitive and unacceptable.
