Attica hunt three-peat in UWI Champions League
Taylor Hall’s Fraternity of Atticawill be seeking to secure their third consecutive hold on the Sagicor UWI Guild Champions League football title when hey meet debutant Roosters in a Taylor Hall derby at UWI Mona Bowl on today at 7:00 pm.
Last year, Attica retained the Sagicor UWI Guild Champions League football title after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over fellow Taylor Hall team Stallion Republic. The team also won the tournament in 2006.
Barrington Groves, Brand Manager of Sagicor Life Jamaica, said: “We are very pleased with the growth of the competition and the impact it has had on the Mona campus. Come Friday (today), we hope for a good game on and off the field and a large turn-out of the Campus family.”
The winning team will carry off $100,000, while the runnerss-up will collect $50,000.
In early November, Attica defeated Roosters 1-0 in a closely contested inter-block game for Taylor Hall, but this being the Champions League final, the game is likely to take on a different meaning as each team will be hunting for bragging rights as the best team on campus.
Coach Andrew Peart of Attica, who is also going for his third title, said: “We were always confident that will win. On Friday, I just want my players to play the game and not the occasion.”
In their quest to dethrone the champion, Roosters will be led by Thovar Green, Lamar Duncan and their leading goal-scorer, Oshane Rodney, who has scored four goals since the league started on November 3.
An elated Dorlan Hunter, coach of Roosters, said it was “a great achievement to reach the final in our first year”, and he added that “my players have worked very hard”.
The final will be preceded by a game between Sagicor and the UWI Guild All-Stars and celebrities at 5:00 pm.
