MoBay Sixers gain first hold on JPL T20
DISCOVERY BAY, St Ann — MoBay Sixers took a first hold on the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) Jamaica Premier League Twenty20 (JPL T20) title after defeating last year’s champions University Dynamites by four wickets in the final yesterday.
In the match played at the scenic Ultimate Cricket venue and witnessed by former Prime Minister PJ Patterson, the MoBay Sixers made 146-6 in reply to the University Dynamites’ 144-9.
Scores: University Dynamites 144-9 (20 overs); MoBay Sixers 146-6 (17.4 overs).
The Sixers took the $1 million winners’ cheque, while the losers walked away with $300,000.
The winning captain Jermaine Blackwood said effective teamwork paid dividends. “It’s a very good feeling to win this title. The team gelled together and that took us through today,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Dynamites skipper Jon-Ross Campbell said his team should have posted a bigger target. “We lost the game in the batting. We had a good start and we didn’t build on it. The total wasn’t enough on a good batting pitch,” Campbell said.
Under clear skies and with a friendly afternoon wind caressing the venue, the Dynamites took first strike and opened with Campbell and Delbert Gayle.
A fine opening stand ensued as Campbell, in particular, was dismissive in carrying the bowlers over the boundary ropes for a few cleanly-hit sixes.
The pair added quick-fire 70 runs in seven overs before Gayle was bowled by left-arm orthodox slow bowler Damion Distin for 22 off 15 balls.
The tournament’s most prolific batsman, Nkrumah Bonner (five), was soon run out following a mix-up with Campbell.
The accurate Distin also bowled Campbell after he played to the on-side and missed a sharply spinning delivery. Campbell, who went at 86-3, blazed 49 runs off 28 deliveries including five sixes and two fours.
His dismissal slowed the progress of the Dynamites and only a late order revival helped them past the 140-mark. Distin led the Sixers with 3-14, while Jermaine Blackwood grabbed 3-30.
The MoBay Sixers began their chase aggressively, but lost the hard-hitting Kenar Lewis (21) at 33-1 in the fourth over.
Skipper Blackwood went cheaply when he was bowled by medium pacer David Bernard at 45-2. The Sixers struggled briefly but middle order batsman Myron Wilson struck an unbeaten 46 off 29 balls to guide his team to victory. He hit four sixes and a four.
The second staging of the month-long JPL was endorsed and organised by the Jamaica Cricket Association.
