THE health centre in Tivoli Gardens, West Kingston, was reopened last Thursday under a new name following extensive remodelling valued at over $20 million, which was provided by the CHASE fund.

The Charles Chin Loy Health Centre, originally named the Kiwanis Maternity Health Centre, was donated to the community by the Kiwanis Club of Kingston in 1968.

It has been designated a Type II health facility and apart from maternal and child health care, will offer dental, paedtriatic and nutrition services for people living in Tivoli Gardens and surrounding communities.

Thursday, West Kingston Member of Parliament (MP) Desmond McKenzie urged residents to take care of the facility.

“This facility that has been remodelled and being renamed goes back to the early 1960s as a part of the transformation of what was known as ‘Backa Wall’, which was the largest slum in Jamaica,” McKenzie said.

The MP said he was pleased about the reopening of the facility as it will improve the delivery of health care to citizens in not just Tivoli Gardens but the entire West Kingston and surrounding areas.

The centre was officially opened by Minister of Health Dr Fenton Ferguson.
