USA clinch Women’s U-20 semi-final spot with victory over Jamaica
GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (CMC) — The United States became the first team to seal a semi-final spot in the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Football Championship with a 3-0 victory against Jamaica at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on Saturday.
Savannah Jordan scored in her second straight match, Andi Sullivan netted a penalty kick in the first half and substitute McKenzie Meehan tallied her first U-20 goal late in the game.
A physical Jamaica side bunkered on defence to open the match and limited the USA’s scoring chances in the first 30 minutes. The US kept attacking and found some rhythm — and two goals — in the final 15 minutes of the first half and then with eight minutes left in regulation, the US netted an insurance goal through McKenzie Meehan.
The Americans now own sole possession of first place in Group A with six points, three ahead of second-placed Costa Rica. Jamaica and Guatemala have a point each, but the Caribbean champion is in third on goal difference.
It was a tournament record-extending 12th straight victory for the Americans, who conclude group play today against Guatemala. Jamaica will need to defeat Costa Rica the same day in order
to advance.
Earlier on Saturday in Group A play, Costa Rica eliminated Guatemala with a 5-1 victory.
The two finalists and third-place game winner of the CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship book spots to the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada later this year.
