William Knibb, Spot Valley look to seal the deal in western basketball
MONTEGO BAY, St James- William Knibb Memorial’s Under 19 team and Spot Valley High’s Under 16 team will this afternoon seek to win the first titles at this level when they take one nil leads into game two of their best of three ISSA/KFC Western Conference high school boys basketball finals against double defending champions Muschett High at the Montego Bay Cricket Club, starting at 2:00 pm.
In last Wednesday’s Game One at the same venue William Knibb shocked Muschett 81-65, their first loss of the season in the Unde-19 game while Spot Valley scored a 60-42 victory in the Under-16 game, beating the Trelawny school for the second time this season. Muschett High are the two time defending champions in the Under-19 section and are seeking back-to-back titles in the Under 16.
Last week, Muschett High led William Knibb 20-18 and 34-30 but managed just eight points in the third quarter as William Knibb increased their defensive intensity which led to easy baskets as they outscored Muschett by 20 points 51-31.
Today the Muschett coaching staff must find a way to contain Shavaughn Reid, Daniel Henry and Alwayne Smith who combined for 73 points.
Karlington Barrett had a subpar game for Muschett on Wednesday, scoring just eight points and must come prepared to play today if his team is to have any chances of extending the finals to a third game.
Meanwhile, St James High and Cornwall College secured third place in the Under-16 and Under-19 sections respectively on Friday in the consolation play-offs at the Cricket Club.
Cornwall College gave up a double digit first half lead and lost by 13 points 40-27 to St James High in the rain affected Under-16 game, scoring just six points in the entire second half.
Cornwall which had won the previous game between the two teams, led 11-7 and 21-9 at the first two intervals but St James responded in the second half to outscore them 21-6 in the second half with Tafari Vassell leading the way with 24 points and Aaron Allen with 10 points.
Antonio Spence scored nine points and had 14 rebounds and 12 blocked shots for Cornwall.
In the Under-19 game, Cornwall avenged an earlier loss to Herbert Morrison Technical, winning 52-38 as the losers managed just 18 points in the first three quarters, trailing 8-12, 14-24 and 18-34 at the intervals.
Tevin Brown scored 29 points and had 10 rebounds for Cornwall College and Andrew Johnson scored 14 points and had 15 steals.
David Peck was Herbert Morrison’s top player with 17 points, eight rebounds, two blocked shots and three assists.
