O’BRIEN White was again the toast at Caymanas Park yesterday when he rode another double, which included Burning Medic in the Clifford Stewart Memorial Cup feature over 1,200 metres.

Sent off as the 9-5 favourite, Burning Medic broke well and was held in third by White behind the leaders Terra Marique (Dick Cardenas) and Premium Returns (Richards Mitchell).

When asked to go by White, Burning Medic responded well and rounded horses passing the 300 metre-pole and then drew clear from the field turning for home. And although swerving to the right in the last furlong, he had done enough and held on for a two-and-a-quarter lengths victory over the fast-finishing Vibes Master (Larris Allen) with Premium Returns in third.

Burning Medic covered the distance in a pleasing 1:15:3 minutes.

“I didn’t expect him to win that easy, but if you look at his (Burning Medic) history he runs his best races out of the straight, but he won his last race well coming from behind,” trainer Norman Smith told the Jamaica Observer.

Burning Medic is six-year-old chestnut gelding by Burning Margue-Wild Medic by The Medic and is owned and trained by Norman Smith and bred by Carl Anderson. He was winning his second race of the season from five starts with lifetime earnings of just over $2 million.

White other winner was Let De Car Purr in the sixth race over six furlongs. Let De Cat Purr is owned, trained and bred by Carl Anderson.

Meanwhile, Rio Cobre was an easy winner in an Overnight Allowance race over 1,000 metres round. Ridden by Dick Cardenas, the Wayne DaCosta-trained six-year-old dark bay gelding by Chelsey Cat-Chelsey’s Finest by Crafty Friend after a superb stretch-run, pulled away form rivals in the last 200 metres to win by four-and-a-quarter lengths in a time of 59:3 seconds. Border Line (Dane Nelson) was second and Frankenstorm (Orlando Foster) third.

Jockey Richard Mairs also rode two winners on the nine race programme. His winners were Powerful Red at 23-1 in the fourth race for trainer Welsh Soutar over 1,200 metres and the Owen Sharpe-trained Candace at 3-1 in the ninth and final race over 1,000 metres round.

After an easy win in the Clifford Stewart Memorial Cup feature at Caymanas Park yesterday, Burning Medic, with O’Brien White astride, makes that happy trip to the winners’ enclosure. White continued his recent good form with two winners on the nine-race programme.
