TRINIDADIAN band Roy Cape All Stars with singer Dexter ‘Blaxx’ Stewart gave an impressive one-hour set at Bacchanal Fridays, at Mas Camp in St Andrew, last Friday.

The band, which has been to Jamaica on several occasions, used their ‘yard’ experience to great effect.

Energetic displays from DJ Smoke and the Appleton Dancers set the pace for Blaxx and Roy Cape All Stars who rolled through 2013/14 Soca staples like Skinny Fabulous’ Behaving the Worst, Bunji Garlin’s Differentology, and Machel Montano’s The Fog.

Blaxx then kicked things up a notch by dividing the VIP and general admission sections into carnival and bacchanal, respectively. His constant prodding had the ‘teams’ trying to outdance each other.

When the invitation for a ‘Rolly Polly’ (a plump woman) to join him on stage went unanswered, Blaxx pushed the crowd harder by taking the Jamaican and Trinidadian flags on stage and renaming each section accordingly.

The band belted out a few more songs including their hit Leh Go, before leaving on a high note.

Ricardo Drue, Roy Cape All Stars’ lead singer, spoke to the Jamaica Observer after the show about the current state of soca music.

“I think the Major Lazer remix of Bunji’s Differentology says otherwise that soca can be viable on the international market. It just has to adapt to the tastes of the overseas market,” he said.
