McAnuff puts spin on classic
ONE of David McAnuff’s favourite songs is Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by doo wop pioneers The Platters. Recently, the singer covered the 1950s classic, though his version has a religious twist.
The song, Love is a Burning Fire, seeks to answer a question he is often asked.
“People always ask, ‘how yuh know Jah is real’, ’cause dem have their doubts,” he said. “A song like this show how I feel…Is the same love (like the Platters) but is also a spiritual love.”
Love is a Burning Fire is from McAnuff’s latest album, Medical Reggae, which was released by his First Rise Productions company.
In late May, he is scheduled to kick off a month-long tour of Japan promoting the 13-track set which was largely recorded with the Uprising Roots Band.
A former drummer of the Black Kush band, McAnuff is the younger brother of roots singer Winston McAnuff. He has lived in Japan for over 20 years, recording albums and performing on some of the country’s biggest festivals.
He plans to capitalise on that familiarity with the upcoming dates.
“Wi going into the big cities, cause wi looking for as much exposure as possible,” he said.
The tour is scheduled to start May 30 at the Afrobeat Club in Nishikasi. Other dates are scheduled for Tokyo, Yohama, Osaka, Giffy, Nagoya, Saitama and Sapporo.
