Bajan jockeys Husbands, Walcott come up short again
ARCADIA, California (CMC) — Barbadians Patrick Husbands and Rico Walcott came up short on the second and final day of the Breeders Cup series here Saturday, finishing down the field in their outings at Santa Anita Park.
Riding in the Grade One Breeders Cup Mile, Husbands finished tenth with 43-1 chance Kaigun as 30-1 outsider Karakontie took the wire by a length to cause a rousing upset.
Husbands and the four-year-old had no impact on the race, sitting mid-pack and then failing to find the final kick through the stretch drive.
The result completed yet another disappointing Breeders Cup for Husbands following on from this two races on Friday where he finished fourth in the Juveniles Turf Stakes with Conquest Typhoon and third from last in the Juveniles Fillies Turf with Conquest Harlanate.
Walcott, meanwhile, came home second from last with Blue Dancer in the 11-horse field in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Stakes captured by Texas Red.
Going off at odds of 65-1 over a mile and sixteenth, Walcott and Blue Dancer set the pace with handsome fractions of 22.37 seconds for the quarter and 45.66 for the half-mile.
However, Blue Dancer faded in the stretch as 13-1 chance Texas Red came virtually out of nowhere to dominate the last furlong.
