Barbican win cellar clash against Boys’ Town
Barbican FC had to come from behind to score a 2-1 win over Boys’ Town FC in their Red Stripe Premier League bottom-of-the-table encounter at Barbican Stadium on Wednesday.
Rafiek Thomas sent Boys’ Town in front in the 11th minute. But Jermaine Parris pulled Barbican level in the 54th minute, before Akino Bailey made the three points safe in the 57th minute.
The win moved Barbican up to 13 points and 10th in the 12-team standing, while Boys’ Town has now been regulated to the foot of the table.
The game was nothing spectacular, but did have a few entertaining moments. Both teams wasted little time in getting settled and Boy’s Town found themselves on the score sheet first when Thomas headed home a well-weighted cross from Andre Dawson.
Barbican went agonisingly close to level the score but the hapless Roy Forbes watched in despair as his shot came back off the upright, much to the delight of Boys’ Town’s defensive unit as they went to the break 1-0 up.
The tempo of the game increased shortly after the resumption and a lapse in the Boys Town defence allowed Parris to get in on goal and fire a composed shot past goalkeeper Leon Goffe. Three-minutes later, Bailey sent the host in front with a beautifully struck right-footed shot from 20 yards out, which was out of the ‘keeper’s reach despite a diving attempt.
Winning coach Raymond Beckford hailed his team’s performance.
“It was a good game by us, we started slow but we appreciate the three points because we really needed it,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
His counterpart Andrew Pryce was left lamenting what could have been.
“Our team has to be more tenacious especially coming off a victory. We are too easily satisfied, we didn’t put the cutting edge that is required to win games out here today (Wednesday) and as a result Barbican were able to get the three points,” he said.
