U 20 Football Champs: Guatemala defeat Jamaica 1-0
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s Under-20 men’s football team suffered a major setback in the CONCACAF Championship losing 0-1 to Guatemala at the National Stadium in Kingston Sunday night.
Steven Robles netted the winner in the 27th minute as the well-organised Guatemalans did just enough to hold on for victory.
Having come from behind to hold the USA to a 1-1 draw in their first outing, Guatemala moved to third in the group on four points. Panama lead with six points after clipping the USA 1-0 while Trinidad and Tobago are second with four points after trouncing Aruba 5-1.
Jamaica are in fourth place with one point, just ahead of the Americans on goal difference. Aruba are pointless at the bottom of the table.
Jamaica started the game without top striker Michael Seaton because of a knee injury and he was badly missed upfront.
The young Reggae Boyz made three changes to the starting team from their first game bringing Khallil Stewart in midfield for I’ismale Currie, Allando Brown at left back for Isamnia Cohen and Donja Smith started upfront for the injured Seaton.
But once again Jamaicans were slow out of the blocks offering very little in the first half. The lack lustre start cost them dearly despite a late rally in the second half.
Jamaica will now turn their attention to Panama on Wednesday while Guatemala will take on Trinidad and Tobago and the US will tackle Aruba.
