DL Series
Following their release of the DL600 and 700 in the latter part of 2013, Digicel has gone on to release the DL750, 800 and 900 throughout the year 2014.
The smartphone offerings are affordable with relatively the same specifications as other well-known and more expensive brands.
The series has seen some improvements in quality such as upgrading from Android 4.2 OS in the 600 and 700 to the 4.4 OS in the 750 and 800.
Both the DL800 and 900 feature an 8MP back camera with LED flash and the 900 boasts a 1.3 GHz, quad core processor with 1GB RAM and 4GB internal memory, all of which combine to give a fast and efficient smart phone.
And with all phones in the series under $20,000, buying one would be a definite win-win for you.
Huawei Ascend
The Huawei Ascend series also saw some action last year with the release of the Ascend Y600 and Ascend P7.
The Y600 is a fairly inexpensive smart phone with a 1.3 GHz, dual core processor and the Android 4.2 (Jellybean) OS.
It also features a multi-touch display and 5MP camera.
The Ascend P7 on the other hand, is a bit pricier.
But with a 1.8 GHz, quad core processor with a 2GB RAM, a 13MP back camera with auto focus and LED flash and a micro SD slot that can accommodate up to 64GB of memory the P7 would be worth every dollar spent.
Vine and Snapchat
Vine and Snapchat, released in 2013 and 2011 respectively, both saw an increase in its use by the Jamaican population in 2014.
More and more Jamaican Vines were made, most of which were hilarious, and with the availability of more affordable smartphones the SnapChat app became a popular means of communication among the younger generation.
