Drone policy needed
Dear Editor,
It is good to see that the Jamaica Constabulary Force is adapting to the changes in technology through the introduction of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAE), commonly called drones, in St James.
So far, over 70 people have been murdered and over 13 illegal firearms recovered since the start of the year in the said parish. It is my firm belief that the introduction of these drones will aid in the reduction of criminal activity, if monitored properly.
It is important to highlight that drones raise serious concerns with respect to privacy as well as safety for citizens on the ground. Due to their capabilities, it is said that an individual’s right to privacy cannot be guaranteed and has prompted debates in several countries including the United States. Drones are also frequently involved in accidents resulting in damage to property.
While I support the use of drones to help in the fight against crime, there needs to be a policy in place to ensure the safety and rights of all Jamaicans.
