Alacrann to make successful seasonal debut
THE Anthony Nunes-trained Alacrann, a stylish winner of last season’s Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL) Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes, makes his three-year-old debut among Overnight Allowance horses at Caymanas Park today.
In the absence of a designated feature race, the Overnight Allowance sprint going 1,200 metres will take centre stage and is set to go to post at approximately 4:20 pm with first post set at 12:10 pm.
Alacrann, a chestnut son of Traditional out of Maria’s Appeal (Maria’s Mom) is owned by Stephan Narinesingh and bred by Brian Harold Murray.
Alacrann was very impressive in preparation for his senior campaign debut and will face a very good mixture of capable runners in the Overnight Open Allowance category.
Among his rivals will be the Wayne DaCosta-trained Double The Honey, an eight-year-old bay horse that still possesses the capability to run this field close. Robert Halledeen will ride.
The Guv at nine years old is no slouch, and with Shane Ellis called to the saddle by trainer Spencer Chung could offer worthwhile opposition and so too Red Flag. Trained by Solomon Sharpe and part-owned and bred with father Owen, the seven-year-old bay gelded son of Pat N Jac out of Yankee Princess (America’s Pal), is no back number and with Paul Francis in the saddle, will be in the hunt for much more than just the ride. However, beyond the aforementioned, Alacrann has very little to consider beyond winning on a canter with champion jockey Dane Nelson in the irons.
Also making her three-year-old debut is top contender for the fillies Guineas, Come Dance With Me.
Also prepared for racing by Nunes, the chestnut daughter of Blue Pepsi Lodge out of Soca Dancer (Dance Master) bred by Howard Hamilton and also owned by Stephan Narinsingh will contest the third race on the 10-race card going 1,300 metres among Restricted Stakes (Imported three-year-olds and upward, NW3 and maidens/native bred four-year-olds NW3 O/T, and native bred three-year-olds.
Unlike stablemate Alacrann, Come Dance With Me could find winning a little more testing with the presence of nemesis colt Ali Baba, who has beaten her twice as juveniles.
Ali Baba, the mount of Robert Halledeen, has gone from strength to strength, being undefeated as a three-year-old by winning his two races in commanding fashion, the last in Overnight Allowance.
However, let’s not forget that Come Dance With Me holds a victory over Alacrann and having trained well for her three-year-old conquest could take advantage of the 1.5 kg that Ali Baba will allow her over a distance that she will enjoy, and with Nelson back on board the 2,000 Guineas and 1,000 Guineas prospects will not be far away from each other, with Ali Baba given the slightest of edges.
