NEPA warns Wray and Nephew about pollutants from Appleton Estate

KINGSTON, Jamaica – J Wray and Nephew Limited, operators of Appleton Estate, have been served with a warning about pollutants coming from the facility along the North Elim River in St Elizabeth.

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) reported that high-strength trade effluent (dunder) is being discharged into the environment from the facility.

The company has been ordered to cease the activity immediately and take measures to mitigate the impact of the discharge, NEPA said in a release Tuesday.

On  Saturday, March 28, NEPA responded to reports from citizens and business entities of a pollution incident along the river. The source was traced to the Appleton Estate premises.

The investigations are continuing and further action will be taken, NEPA said, adding that it will provide updates as the investigations progress.
