Tournament of Kings serves off today
KATHERINE Wynter will look to defend her A Division Open Ladies’ Singles title as the 2015 Jamaica Badminton Association’s Tournament of Kings serves off today at the Constant Spring Golf Club Racquet Complex, starting at 9:00 am.
Wynter created a mild upset in last year’s tournament, defeating local queen Geordine Henry (now retired) 21-16, 22-20 to take the title.
The 18-year-old Wynter, who has now been promoted as the tournament’s number-one seed, will play Nicole Simpson in her first match tomorrow in the two-day championship.
“Being the number-one seed coming into this tournament is no pressure at all. I will just play my natural game as I know how to win matches,” Wynter told the Jamaica Observer.
In the Men’s equivalent, Samuel Ricketts, who is the defending champion, is injured, and top player Gareth Henry is in Peru, which gives Che Beckford the opportunity to claim his first title in this tournament. Beckford became the tournament’s number-one seed when the draw came out on Thursday.
Alana Bailey and Taina Daley should fight out the B Ladies’ Singles, while in the B Men’s Singles it should be an easy win for Mathew Lee.
Demetra Mew is expected to lift the C Ladies’ Singles, but it should be a close race among Nicardo Reid, Joel Angus and Zane Reid in the Men’s equivalent.
In the D Ladies’ Singles, it should be a straight fight between Emily Reynolds and Mikayla Hardware, while the D Men’s Singles should be determined by the top four of Shaun Clarke, Tijae Hinds, Andre Stewart and Romaine Clarke.
