PPV operators granted 16% increase in two phases
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Government has approved a 16 per cent fare increase for public passenger vehicle (PPV) operators, with the adjustment set to take effect in phases beginning Tuesday.
The increase, which has been pending since April 2024, will be introduced in two stages. An initial eight per cent adjustment will take effect in June, followed by a further eight per cent increase in July.
Transport Minister Daryl Vaz announced the decision on Tuesday morning, noting that the Government opted for a phased approach to lessen the inflationary impact that a single 16 per cent increase in June could have had on commuters.
According to Vaz, the staggered implementation is intended to strike a balance between the financial challenges faced by PPV operators and the need to minimise the immediate burden on the travelling public.
