Bottom-of-the-table Leicester came from behind three times to secure a dramatic 3-2 win away to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday which gave them hope of avoiding relegation from the Premier League.

Jamie Vardy’s stoppage-time winner capped a stunning fightback by Nigel Pearson’s side, who are now three points from safety with seven games remaining.

Darren Fletcher gave the Baggies an early lead and, soon after David Nugent’s equaliser, they were 2-1 in front through Craig Gardner before Robert Huth equalised ten minutes from the end of normal time.

Vardy completed the come-from-behind win in the 91st minute and Leicester held on for just their sixth league win this season.

West Brom had designated this match ‘Jeff Astle Day’ in memory of their late former striker, who scored the club’s winning goal in their 1-0 1968 FA Cup final victory over Everton at Wembley.

Players took the field wearing a replica of the Baggies’ 1968 Cup final kit – plain white shirts, shorts and red socks — rather than their usual home blue and white stripes.

However, there was a sombre edge to the nostalgia with the match marking the launch of the Jeff Astle Foundation, a charity set up by his family following the England World Cup forward’s death from dementia aged 59 in January 2002.

An inquest coroner ruled Astle had suffered “death by industrial disease” as a result of his repeated heading of old-fashioned heavy leather footballs, prompting fears that other players of his generation might be similarly affected.

It was with a header that former Manchester United midfielder Fletcher gave the Baggies an eighth-minute lead when he glanced in a corner.

Esteban Cambiasso hooked the ball out but goal-line technology showed the Argentina midfielder’s intervention had come too late to prevent the Baggies going ahead.

Leicester equalised in the 20th minute when, following Leonardo Ulloa’s downward header, Nugent poked in from close range.

However, the Foxes were only level for a matter of minutes before Gardner’s shot deflected in off Leicester defender Wes Morgan.

But a frantic finale saw former Chelsea and Stoke defender Huth head Leicester level in the 80th minute after the Baggies failed to deal with a set-piece.

And there was one more twist when Vardy, after dispossessing Gareth Macauley, sprinted forward and beat Boaz Myhill with a low shot across the Baggies goalkeeper from the edge of the box.
