MARK Kenny, executive producer and creator of the television talent series Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall, says there is no political motive behind Opposition leader Andrew Holness’ guest judge appearance on tomorrow night’s episode.

Holness, 42, is a former prime minister and leader of the Jamaica Labour Party.

Kenny, who spoke to Splash, said that in order to strike a balance, a representative from the governing People’s National Party (PNP) will also be a guest judge before the series ends on May 9.

“Originally, the guest judge for this Saturday was supposed to be Ishawna, but she has an overseas engagement. We were the ones who reached out to Andrew’s handlers. We’ve had persons from both political parties on the show, so this is not unusual for us,” said Kenny.

He explained why Holness was invited.

“Andrew has proven to be charismatic; he’s eloquent, intelligent and a good speaker,” he said.

Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall started in 2007. After eight seasons, Kenny believes it has achieved its objectives. He spoke about its growth.

“The show has evolved, I didn’t expect it to have been as successful as it has become. I didn’t expect to be doing it so long, either. It reflects positive on the Jamaican culture,” he said.

The first winners were Baby Tash and Singer Jah. Over the years, the series has helped expose Jah Bouks, Tanto Blacks, and Chosen.

Magnum Kings and Queens expanded this season with auditions in the Caribbean. Three entries from Trinidad and Tobago made the final cut.

The show airs in that country on TV6.

“The show is holding its own in Trinidad and the reaction has been very good. We plan to expand on airing the show in other territories next year, but it’s an expensive proposition,” said Kenny.

‘Magnum’ got a shot in the arm two weeks ago with the inclusion of dancehall selector/disc jockey Foota Hype as a guest judge. He has been involved in a much-publicised feud with the show’s resident judge Cordell ‘Skatta’ Burrell.

Kenny said a venue has been identified for the grand finale.

“We have a nice venue downtown, which is the Fisherman’s car park across from the bus park. We will be having a live band backing all the performers and there will be lots of guest performers and surprises.”
