PRIDE of the Caribbean, a production mounted by Beaches Negril, opened to rave reviews from both guests and staff recently.

In keeping with the notion that Caribbean has its roots in Africa, the show comprises several traditional pieces. From the opening dance Welcome to Jamaica to the closing piece which sees the cast performing to Shakira’s “Waka Waka”, the entire production is a commendable effort.

One of the standout pieces include a duet with Red Lane Spa assistant manager Patrick Watt and entertainment coordinator Shellydean Bartley.

Their rendition of Elton John’s Can You Feel the Love Tonight? captivates the audience.

The piece is accompanied by a trapeze artiste, who captivates the viewers with adept swings and balances. Not to be outdone is the contortionist who evokes applauses from spectators. The fire dancers and jugglers are also another spectacular addition to the performances.

Weston Haughton, former Group Creative Director of Sandals Resorts International, gave the show thumbs up.

“Overall, the production’s a very good effort. The energy level is high and the pieces are well coordinated,” told the Sunday Observer.

He added that as a tropical country which has ties to Africa, this is what is needed for our visitors so they can appreciate our culture more and where we come from.

He also had commendations for Beaches Negril’s entertainment manager Garett Bailey.

“It is encouraging when we have persons like Bailey who is willing to step forward and do what’s needed to promote the talent of the staff here at the resort and also showcase our rich culture,” he said.

The production, which will run for a year, was the brainchild of Bailey and Sandals Resorts International’s group choreographer, Nakoy Asher, who composed the dance pieces.

The costume designs were also conceptualised by Bailey and Asher and manufactured by Beverley Dunn of Beverley Design Centre in Negril.
