PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Emmanuel Callender put himself in line for a spot on Trinidad and Tobago’s sprint relay team for the IAAF Relays next month in the Bahamas, when he broke the 100 metres meet record at the NAAATT President’s Classic here Saturday.

The 30-year-old, who captured bronze with the T&T sprint relay team at the London 2012 Olympics, clocked 10.23 seconds at the Hasely Crawford Stadium to erase the old meet record of 10.47 posted by Rondel Sorillo last year.

In the process, the two-time Central American and Caribbean champion became the second fastest Trinidadian in the world this year.

His record was one of 14 to fall during the meet. Rising star Akanni Hislop left his mark on the event, when he claimed the inaugural boys’ Under-18 200 metres in a time of 21.28.

Hislop was fastest earlier this month when he clocked 20.91 to win the same age group title at the 44th Carifta Games in St Kitts.

Portious Warren, who also won at Carifta, was herself in record-breaking form as she claimed the women’s shot putt with a new measurement of 14.39 metres.

This mark shattered Chelsea James’ old one of 13.97m set last year. James, who claimed bronze at Carifta behind Warren, finished with silver this time around in a mark of 14.33 which also eclipsed her old mark.

Warren threw 15.22m earlier this month at Carifta.
