Jamalco reclaim Clarendon Major League title
TOLL GATE, Clarendon — Jamalco FC regain their hold on the Clarendon/Captain’s Bakery Major League title following a routine 2-0 victory over Comfort FC in the final at the Toll Gate Community Centre on Sunday.
The goals were scored five minutes apart, with Akeem Henry slotting in from close range after 30 minutes, before Roshane Sharpe fired home at the near post in the 35th.
Comfort, playing in their first Major League final, never looked the part and failed to record a shot on target, despite growing into the game in the second half.
Jamalco, who were winning their second title in three years, have now completed the quartet of teams that will campaign in the South Central Confederation Super League play-offs.
The other teams in the play-offs are Portmore United from St Catherine, Hillstars from Manchester and Appleton Estate from St Elizabeth.
“This is a step in the right direction,” said coach Rayon Johnson in his post-game interview. “Last year we went close to qualifying for the Premier League, so now we will use that as a guide as we try to go one better this year.”
“We are elated for the victory,” he added, “but there is not much time between now and the start of the play-offs, so we have to get back to work right away and start our preparation.”
For Comfort, this was their second defeat of the season, both inflicted by Jamalco by 2-0 margins. “The players respected Jamalco too much,” said coach Ryan White, “so once Jamalco scored they just gave up”.
