CHILL-OUT HUT
Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards judge for the parish of St James Dr Claudine Lewis starts the much-anticipated countdown to her culinary gems.
Food should be enjoyed, savoured leisurely and should not be eaten for sustenance. I like freshly prepared food that’s as close to source as possible, meals should also be balanced and healthy. I love how food brings us together and forms a key part of our cultural identity. For me getting to know a new place, means getting to know the food, so for me, it’s also adventure.
Located on the eastern end of St James, Chill-Out Hut is close to the border of St James and Trelawny. For most Montegonians who live on the western end (Freeport, Bogue, Reading, etc) a trip to Chill-Out Hut seems far, but well worth the visit.
The venue is an idyllic beach hideaway — you will at once feel relaxed and secluded. Quaint seating is provided in individual huts or the main hut with bar.
The wait will be long, so don’t go too hungry, or be prepared to order an appetiser while you wait for your tantalising meal to be prepared. Seafood is their specialty.
My favourite is grilled snapper, which is done to perfection, giving you melt-in your-mouth goodness with each bite. I love bammy and wish they offered baked bammy, but the only menu options are fried or steamed.
With insistence, they will throw the bammy on the grill with the fish, and it is yummy. The portions are huge and perfect for sharing with friends.
The lobster mac and cheese is also divine! Although it is diet, waistline and cholesterol buster, but it is worth it on a cheat day.
