THE Jakes Off Road Triathlon celebrated their 20th anniversary with yet another successful staging, organisers say.

Last weekend’s event, involving a 300-metre ocean swim, a 15-mile off-road cycle contest and a four-mile cross-country run, is hosted annually by Jason Henzell, who operates Jakes Hotel in Treasure Beach.

A news release said the aim was to raise funds and awareness to develop the sports for social change programme in Treasure Beach.

This year’s staging had local and international entrants who participated as relay teams and individually.

Many time winner Jassett Bromfield, a farmer from St Elizabeth, once again emerged as the male individual champion with a time of 1 hour and 23 minutes. Emily Smith took home the women’s title in 1 hour and 38 minutes.

“This win means a lot to me not only because it is my 14th time winning (11 individually and 3 times on a team), but because Treasure Beach is where I am from,” said Bromfield as he spoke to the crowd during the prize-giving ceremony.

Over 115 triathletes took part. Many said they would be back next year, not just because of the competition, but because they were impressed by the Treasure Beach community.

Henzell was elated. “I just could not be happier,” he said, as he thanked participants and sponsors.

“Congratulations to all who won and certainly to all who took part in this triathlon. We look forward to next year’s staging with even greater enthusiasm,” he said.
